Actress Mary Khavere, popularly known as Mama Kayai from the popular show Vitimbi, says her first salary was Sh40.
The actress appeared on Jalas TV and shared how far the Kenyan entertainment sector has come because when she was starting in the 1990s, she was only paid that amount.
“I used to earn Sh40 and I was fine with it,” she said.
She went on to say that her parents had no idea she was an actress and would question and beat her because of the money.
“My mum would ask me where I got the money when I took it home, and she would beat me because I used to hide when going on set,” she said.
Khavere, who is now 63 years old, finally explained to her mum she’s an actress and went ahead to give her Ksh 35 of her earning.
“It was a lot of money back then. I would give Sh35 to my mother and spend the rest on myself na maisha inaendelea,” she said.
She says nowadays, actors are better paid but the problem is they misuse it.
“They don’t know how to use it. They spend money on alcohol and other things, which don’t add value to their lives,” she said.
