As we enter day 2 of the inaugural SportPesa Super Cup, the level of competition only gets stiffer. Day one saw us bid farewell to two teams Singida United and Tusker FC, from Tanzania and Kenya respectively.
Both teams were bundled out of the tournament on post-match penalties after the matches resulted in draws after regular time. Nonetheless, neither team walked away empty handed as SportPesa guaranteed that teams not making it past the quarterfinal stage will still walk away with a hearty $2,500.
Vodacom Premier League Champions Yanga SC were responsible for knocking out Tusker FC from Kenya. Consequently they set up a semi-final thriller against AFC Leopards who edged Singida FC on penalties. The semi will be played on Thursday 8th June at the Uhuru Stadium, Dar Es Salaam.
Today, the first fixture sees 15-time Kenyan league winners Gor Mahia go up against Jang’ombe FC from Zanzibar. Gor, who are currently the league leaders in the SportPesa Premier League will not be lacking in confidence that would see them through to join their oldest rivals AFC Leopards in the semis.
K’Ogalo will also rejoice in the fact that a number of key players did not travel with the national team and will be available in their quest to be crowned Super Cup Champions.
The final match of the day will see local giants Simba SC take on Nakuru All Stars FC from Kenya’s second division. Though Simba may have slightly a better advantage of their opponents in terms of exposure to East African club football, the team from Nakuru seem just as motivated as anybody else.
“I don’t know about this team, we have never met before but what I know is we will win with a huge margin,” Simba head coach Joseph Omog said.
Despite his confidence, Omog is quite concerned following the departure of his ten key players who have linked up with their various national teams. “I will use a contingent of 17 players. My team is a mixture of senior and young players of which eight are new recruits,” he said.
The match will kick-off at 4:15 p.m EAT at the same venue.
