With only 2 days left to the Super Cup courtesy of SportPesa, teams are in their final preparation stage. Not only a hefty amount of money is up for grabs but also the chance to be called the best in East Africa and stand the chance to play in a match against English Premier League’s Everton FC hangs in the balance.
Four teams from Kenya – Gor Mahia FC, Tusker FC, AFC Leopards and Nakuru All Stars. Another 3 teams from the host nation Tanzania – Yanga SC, Simba SC and Singida United plus one team from the Zanzibar region – Jang’ombe FC will battle it out for top honours from the 5th – 11th June 2017.
The teams will be divided into 2 groups, each consisting of 4 teams. Group A will have current SportPesa premier league champions Tusker FC, AFC leopards, Tanzanian power-house Yanga SC and Singida United. Whilst group B will have 15-time Kenyan champions Gor Mahia, Simba SC, Jang’ombe FC and Nakuru All Stars.
Newly promoted to the Vodacaom Premier League, Singida FC will play in the first match of the tournament on Monday 5th June against AFC Leopards from Kenya.
The tournament comes at a time when the Kenya National Football Team, Harambee Stars concurrently have an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone. Subsequently, some Kenyan clubs will be missing a couple of key players in their squads travelling to Dar Es Salaam.
Gor Mahia assistant coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno was granted the task to handle the team over the 6-day tournament. He will be pleased to confirm that star players such as Haron Shakava, Timothy Otieno and Kenneth Muguna will be available. The players handed in requests to skip national duty in order to participate in the tournament with their club.
For their oldest rivals AFC Leopards, their only key absentee from the squad is Robinson Kamura who is away on national duty. Under-20 starlet Vincent Oburu will get the chance to prove his prowess as he received a call-up to the travelling team.
Only a few hours remain to the start of this promising and highly competitive tournament.
