The Standard Gauge Railway cargo section was officially launched yesterday by President Uhuru ahead of the official launch of the passenger train in which a few Kenyans will join him in the maiden SGR train ride to Nairobi.
the move is aimed at reducing cargo transport costs by 40 % meaning companies transporting cargo by SGR will pay ksh 50,000 per twenty foot container down from the ksh 90,000 paid using road. Transport time is also expected to reduce from the 16-24 hour it took by by road to 8 hours by the new system. The president will officially commission the SGR today by taking the maiden trip from Mombasa to Nairobi accompanied by a few Kenyans.
