Abuse of power by policemen in Kenya is not a discussion that started today. It has been a hot topic that surfaces and disappears just as quickly as the incidents hit the news platforms. Kenyans get angry but just for moment and not enough to topple the menace.

Making headlines today is the shooting of a Kenyan woman outside the KICC in Nairobi. Sparking an outrage on social media is footage of the policeman casually walking away from the scene as an angry witness took the video of the ordeal pressuring him to go and take down a written statement at the police station.

The policeman who has since been identified as Constable Reagan Akoko, has since given his account of how the incident went down in a statement.

Apparently the woman who has been identified as Ms. Wairimu shot herself after grabbing his gun,an AK-47 with serial number KP-17121095, after a confrontation ensued when he approached the vehicle which he claims was causing an obstruction.

Kenyans on social media have since declined to take the matter lightly and have since been to mount pressure for investigation of the incident.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since launched it’s own investigation into the matter and has since asked witnesses to come forward. The matter was also reported at Central Police Station under OB number 04/23/07/2017 .
