Ole Bornedal’s The Possession is the story of a father’s battle to rid his young daughter of a malicious evil spirit which inhabits an antique box she bought at a yard sale oblivious of its contents. As if that wasn’t evidence that Halloween has surely come early this year, Paul Anderson’s third production of the Resident Evil franchise makes its debut through the weekend. It’s a melange of a burning vendetta by Alice (played by Milla Jovovich) and gross flesh eating zombies who are taking over the world, thanks to the Umbrella Corporation which seeks to control the world.
Shia LeBouf, who’s threatened to have sex ‘for real’ in an upcoming feature Nymphomaniac, seems to be doing quite well for himself, as Lawless, the Western flick he stars in alongside Tom Hardy and Guy Pearce is second at the Box Office having raked in over $23million in just two weeks of release. As with all ‘Wild West’ films, its about bootlegging bandits, the sherriff and even more dasterdly deeds in depression era Franklin County, Virginia.
The Expendables 2 is still going strong, placing third with about $5million as CBS production The Words, a film primarily about plagiarism and its consequences, has surprised negative critics to grab just over $4million and rank fourth. Bradley Cooper and Olivia Wilde give convincing performances despite the less than stellar figure the film has managed but it’s been one of the most depressing periods for the film industry in close to a decade anyway.
None of these films, except The Expendables 2, are screening yet in Nairobi theatres but we’ll keep you posted as they release. Resident Evil: Retribution is now showing at the IMAX XX Century and Fox Theatres Sarit and Capital Center. You can also watch the animation Brave (Fox Sarit, Planet Media Westgate and Starflix Prestige), action sci-fi Total Recall (IMAX, Planet Media Westgate and Starflix Prestige) and action-thriller HayWire (Planet Media Westgate).
African features Nairobi Half Life and Viva Riva! are screening at Century Cinemax Junction Mall and Starflix Kisumu respectively. Enjoy your weekend, and do catch a flick of your choice!
